Mansions and Museums

Norwalk is home to several museums. These include:

• Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum (1864-1868): Since 1971, this Second Empire style mansion has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The mansion, once the home of railroad robber baron, LeGrand Lockwood has 62 rooms decorated in the finest furniture reflecting the Gilded Age. You can visit the museum and take a tour. You can also take part in any of the programs the Museum offers including a Victorian Tea, an Ice Cream Social, an Old-Fashioned Flea Market and the very popular ghostly tours that take place on Halloween.

• Mill Hill Historic Park and Museum: A living history museum, Mill Hill features a law office from around 1740 of Governor Thomas Fitch IV, as well as the Downtown District Schoolhouse which dates from around 1826, and the 1835 Norwalk Town Hall. The site also features an early cemetery. Take part in such events as a Civil War barbecue, hauntings and beer tasting. Run by the Norwalk Historical Society, Mill Hill provides something for everyone

• Norwalk Museum: The museum is located in the former South Norwalk City Hall. It is executed in the Colonial Revival Style. It is home to various archives related to the city. Check first to see if the building has reopened.

• Stepping Stones Museum: If you have children, this is their museum. They can visit here while you go to nearby Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum. All their exhibits and activities are directed for children under age 10
